We can often see a sentence in the circle of friends: body and mind, there is always one on the road. It reminds the meaning of reading for life. There is also an old Chinese saying: read thousands of books and travel thousands of miles. Reading can improve our cognition, discern things, and have a higher and larger pattern.

In the rehabilitation of depression, there is also a therapy called "reading therapy". Reading therapy is a method of adjusting mood and improving the quality of life by reading a class of books called "self-help" by psychologists and psychoanalysts. , Can also be regarded as a kind of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

"Reading Therapy" was born in a reading therapy study conducted by the famous American psychologist Dr. David Burns. He asked people with depression to finish reading "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" (Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy; also translated "Berns New Mood Therapy") within 4 weeks.

Four weeks later, Burns evaluated the patients again and found that 75% of the patients’ main symptoms disappeared (diagnostic scores were lower than the criteria for the diagnosis of depression). Three years later, Burns followed up with these patients and found that 72% of "patients" did not relapse, and 70% of these recovered patients had not received drugs or other treatments within three years.

In the process of reading, it can alleviate readers' psychological distress, prevent and relieve depression, and reading therapy can speed up the recovery process of patients as an auxiliary treatment of depression. Reading can be regarded as cultivating a wide range of hobbies and hobbies, cultivating your correct cognition, and don't let your irrational thinking control yourself.

Some Western countries have reading agencies. The agency cooperates with the National Health Service to issue differently "book prescriptions" for depression, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, and other psychological problems. In addition to self-help books, It also includes some literary books.

The so-called self-help books refer to professional books in the field of psychology, which are convenient for dealing with emotional problems without professional help. Compared with ordinary reading materials, they are written for readers who need psychological counseling. They usually give some explanations for certain types of emotional problems and provide feasible soothing methods.

According to the person in charge of the Institute of Health and Clinical Medicine in the United Kingdom, these prescription books have been strictly screened to provide scientific advice and self-help skills for patients with mental illness and meet the requirements of cognitive-behavioral therapy. According to the report, libraries supporting this activity will import books based on the bibliography of health institutions. Many books of each type will be imported. The more common ones are "The Advantages of Human Nature", "Rational Conquer Emotions", "Ten Days to Improve Confidence" Wait.

In fact, the earliest reports of using words to cure negative energy can be traced back to nearly 100 years ago. In the September 1916 issue of The Atlantic, an author named Crosels wrote a report on "A Literary Clinic" (A Literary Clinic), which is generally regarded as the world’s first dedicated discussion reading Therapy articles. In the article, the author interviewed Dr. Baigst who works in the church. The doctor turned the small worship room into a reading clinic. He compared medicines to books and compared different books to stimulants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, Alcohol, or anti-fever medicine.

Tulip Companion Organization also has a small partner who calmed down and started reading after depression and benefited from it. Let's take a look at her story.

When I was young, as a good student in school, I always regarded academic performance as the first baton. I felt that only by taking classes well, getting good grades in exams, and going to a good university can I find a good job, make money, and change my position at the bottom. The fate of the future makes life less materially lacking in the future. The "uselessness" of exam-oriented education made me feel deprived.

I regard many books as useless books because I think those books are useless and will not have a big impact on test scores. At home, my parents were too busy with their livelihoods to take care of me; at school, because of my good grades and obedientness, I received the attention of teachers and classmates. To a certain extent, I also enjoyed this attention.

But after putting too much time and energy into this so-called "useful" book, I found that my life became more and more boring and stiff. I always feel that this so-called "useful" book can't bring me happiness, can't bring me confidence, and can't bring me the answer to my confused life. And I don’t even know where to go. Among the mobs of exam-oriented education, you can’t stand alone.

Many years later, after experiencing all kinds of social situations, when I saw Zhuangzi's phrase "Useless, nothing but great use", I actually felt empowered.

When I was "not confused" in my life forty, I was "confused" and I was depressed. Hearing from others, illness is here to remind you, to remind you that you have gone too far on the wrong path, and it’s time to stop and think. In this way, the express train of my life stopped abruptly after rushing at high speed. For a time, I couldn't adapt to it, and I felt that I was properly abandoned by society. But after depression, when death is close at hand, you have become less nostalgic for 996's high-paying job. At this moment, I feel that it is the right way to live well.

Use reading books to gain wisdom

Therefore, I joined Tulip and met Yu's friends who were suffering from the same illness. I saw many other people’s depression stories. At this moment, I realized that there are so many people who are suffering from depression and are seeking salvation and healing. Methods.
Xiaobai of the Tulip Sunshine Club said:
"Drugs can pull a person's upper body out of the quagmire, but only cognitive changes can pull the whole person out, and no longer fall into it." The so-called "surgery saves lives, saves the heart."

I started to come into contact with some books related to depression, such as "Berns New Emotional Therapy", "Overcoming", "Back to the World", "Reconstruction of Life", etc. Slowly began to come into contact with some philosophical books, such as "Xiong Peiyun Mercy and the Rose", "A Historian's View on Religion", "Schopenhauer's Wisdom in Life", "Learn to Accept Yourself-A New Acceptance and Realization Therapy" and so on.

Reading is the growth of human inner cognition. It teaches people how to question, learn to think, learn to explore, learn to live, learn to give and love, learn to be happy, learn to improve their own vision, and learn to grow for life. When I started to read, my heart calmed down.

Whether it is active or forced, I started to gnaw these books one by one. Thanks to my friends for giving me advice and guidance when I read these books. It is different if I have a tutor. In a small area, we have also carried out small book clubs. Frequent collisions of ideas and changes take place every bit. Slowly I found that I became less noisy, less afraid of being alone, no longer needed so much affirmation from others; no longer so scared and impatient, and really calmed down from the heart. I have become love to read books and live with the characters in the books; I love to watch historical dramas and feel life in the long river of human history.

Dialogue with souls one by one in classic books. At this time, you will come into contact with the real sense of being no longer alone, and your heart will begin to become powerful. The Argentine writer Borges once said: "If there is a paradise in this world, paradise should be like a library."

I started reading in a real sense. Not for examinations, for livelihoods, and for no purpose, but to seek happiness and happiness, to seek flow, and to seek inner salvation. The inner strength is filled day by day, and the energy is slowly accumulating. Later, I learned that this friend who forced me to read good books had also been depressed, and succeeded in self-salvation by reading. He said that it was a reshaping of his outlook on life and values. He got rid of drugs and realized the real meaning. Recovery. I think maybe I can too.

I hope to share what I have felt and experience; I hope that more people can benefit, heal myself and move towards recovery. I hope that all depressed lives can realize self-salvation through reading after experiencing pain.

The principle of reading books to help you get out of depression is that a good mental state comes from a true understanding of yourself. The more you understand yourself, the more you can accept yourself, and the stronger your heart will resist the intrusion of bad emotions.

When you are in depression, the world in your eyes is gray, like looking at the scene in the mirror through a dusty mirror, losing objectivity. Friends of Yu can start by reading some simple books and slowly recover their reading ability. A simple criterion is to observe whether you will feel better when you read a book. If it helps your emotions, look at it decisively; the more you look, the more entangled it becomes, pushes it.

In the Hangzhou Tulip Companion Organization, we know that there is a group called "Rice Ball". Since 2016, the group owner Jerry has organized Yuyou in Hangzhou to have an offline meal and meeting. Only those who have met offline can join the "Rice Ball". "Group, we also call Jerry the head of the rice ball. The rice ball activity has continued to this day, helping many Yu friends in Hangzhou to experience the energy that meets offline. In 2021, the "rice ball" group has also undergone many reforms and upgraded to the "rice ball & reading" group. The original intention is to have such an environment and circle where everyone supervises, encourages each other, warms up together, and makes progress together. The rule of the game is to read online, and then there will be a monthly gathering offline to talk about books and bring new people while eating. This is also an attempt to make everyone more closely link and encourage each other, and then finish reading 12 books in 2021 book. The book I read together in January was "Su Dongpo Biography" written by Lin Yutang.
